This is actually a color photograph. Several years ago, a (human-caused) wildfire swept throught a large swath of grassland and the edge of a pine forest near Boulder. This photograph was taken a few weeks after the fire and just after a snowstorm. While the grassland has rejuvenated, parts of the forest still have no pine seedlings.
